En el segundo set, Perú se puso 9 a 6 levantando a todo el coloso chalaco. El juego del capitán Eduardo Romay, Álvaro Hidalgo, Daniel Urueña y Paul Williams empezaba a funcionar. Pero, la sinergia puertorriqueña comenzaba a mostrarse: Arturo Iglesias, Sequiel Sánchez y Palegrin Vargas revirtieron la situación y ponían la pizarra 17 a 14. Los boricuas se despegaron, haciendo gala de su potente ofensiva, para finalmente llevar la manga 25 a 20. Perú cayó, pero mostró mucho carácter y nivel.
La Blanquirroja comenzaba nuevamente con mucha actitud, tomando la delantera (7-4), imponiendo un juego rápido mentalmente. Puerto Rico pecaba con algunos errores no forzados y dejaba a Perú con la ventaja de cinco puntos (9-4). Eduardo Romay se hacía fundamental en esta parte del encuentro, con puntos importantes que ponían a vibrar al público. Hidalgo y Romay prendían la fiesta con puntos sucesivos que dejaban sin aire a los boricuas (16-10). Perú mantenía los cinco puntos de diferencia, a pulso, con control y equilibrio. Sequiel Sánchez erraba en dos oportunidades y dejaba el set point a favor de los nacionales. La representación peruana ganó la manga 25 a 21, y se recobraba la ilusión.
El cuarto parecial arrancaba con muchas complicaciones para el elenco peruano, que se dejó sacar nueve puntos de diferencia (1-10). Los errores no forzados y la poca fortuna ofensiva inclinaban la balanza a favor de los boricuas.
Eduardo Romay y Álvaro Hidalgo anotaron 12 puntos cada uno, siendo los máximos anotadores nacionales. El mayor puntuador de ‘match’ fue Maurice Torres (PR) con 31 unidades.
«De Hecho es una gran frustración por lo que vivimos en la última Copa Panamericana donde perdimos 3 a 2, hoy hubo algunos desaciertos, problemas en la recepción, y creo que al final nos faltó un poquito más de garra, a pesar de que a este equipo le sobra eso. A la gente solo se me ocurre decirle, perdón. Realmente nos apoyaron de príncipio a fin», indicó Eduardo Romay, capitán de la selección peruana de voleibol.
